On July 25th , the Attic Studios and the Attic Theatre Ensemble will present the 17th annual Denise Ragan Wiesenmeyer One‐Act Marathon at the Attic Theatre in Culver City. Playing for four consecutive weekends, the One‐Act Marathon will continue the Attic Theatre’s 20+ years of continuous award‐winning live theatre. Named for Attic Theatre Ensemble co-founder Denise Ragan Wiesenmeyer, who remained on the board of the Attic Theatre and Film Center until her untimely death in 2007, the One‐Act Marathon’s mission is to nurture relatively unknown playwrights by offering them fully realized productions of their works for the very first time. This playwright competition has produced over 150 plays during its 17 years and in 2008, four new works culled from hundreds of submissions during a national playwriting competition, will be added to this distinguished honor roll.

Marked for Love by Kasey Wilson
Directed by J. Richey Nash and featuring Billy Briggs, Scott Gerard, Mike Park, Elias McCabe, John Szura, Megan Evanich, Jennifer Erholm and Elizabeth V. Newman.

In this parody of film noir, Private Detective Bolt investigates an art heist that places him in grave danger from corrupt police officers, the city’s most notorious crime lord, and the woman who broke his heart.

Misconceptions by Donald Steele
Directed by Erika Tasini and featuring Zinah Dietz and Dawn Medina.

After Diana Lazzario talks Gaye Lynn out of having an abortion, Diana’s personal victory turns into a nightmare when the 17‐year‐old girl shows up at her doorstep looking for something more than moral support ‐‐ the pregnant teen needs a roof over her head.

It's summer and that means it's time for our 16th Annual Denise Ragan Weisenmeyer One-Act Marathon.  Throughout the year we solicit new one-act plays from all over the world as entries to our Marathon.  These plays must never have been published or produced in order to qualify.  Then our company picks the best of the bunch to be performed.

This year we have quite a good selection that portray different aspects of women's experiences.  So, we're presenting them under the umbrella title "A Woman's Place".  The first play, "The Body Washer" by Rosemary Frisino Toohey reveals the effects that the war in Iraq has had on 3 very different women whose lives are indirectly connected through an incident at a security checkpoint.  The second, "Ninety-Six Layers Of Concrete, Furniture And Air" by Richard Davis depicts how a lady lawyer helps a delusional would-be "flyer" cope with the aftermath of our national tragedy.  In "Pride of Place" by Donald Steele, a new homeowner learns she has purchased more than just a house.  The last play, "Weightless" by Danielle Wolff explores various aspects of women in the astronaut program.

And there's more.  Every Marathon must have a winner and this year you get to choose.  The audience will decide who our Grand Prize winner will be. Each program will contain a ballot allowing you to determine which playwright will receive the top prize and who will win second place.  So come out and make Attic history.

See you there.

"A Woman's Place" opens Friday July 20th and will play Fridays and Saturdays at 8 PM for 6 weeks.  Call (323) 525-0600 x2 for reservations. Tickets are $20, $15 for Seniors or students.  If you mention that you are on the Attic Newsletter list you can get $5 of the regular ticket price.

The Attic Theatre and Film Center is at 5429 W. Washington Blvd. near Hauser (East of Fairfax) in Los Angeles.
