The show has garnered critical acclaim, but most importantly, the audience reaction has been amazing. We played to near sold out crowds last weekend and expect more of the same for this final weekend.

Our final 2 shows are on Friday, March 23rd at 8 PM and our closing gala event on Saturday, March 24th at 8 PM. The gala will come immediately after the show's final performance.

Tickets for Friday are $20, and for the Gala they are $25. There may be a few half-price tickets at Plays411.com, or you can buy tickets online at www.attictheatre.org/tickets or call the box office at 323-525-0600 x2# See you at the THEATRE!

ATTIC To Receive Generous Grant
Newman Family Foundation Gives the ATTIC Five Thousand Dollar Grant

We are very pleased to announce that the Newman Family Foundation has given the ATTIC a $5000 grant for capital improvements to the theatre space. The grant will be used for new outdoor lighting, a new sign, finishing putting a roof on the backstage greenroom area, and other needed additions to the theatre.

We were introduced the Newman Family Foundation by our member, Elizabeth Newman. She took our request to their board of directors and convinced them that we really needed the money for these improvements. THANK YOU, ELIZABETH!

The new lighting and signage will make it safer on approaching the theatre at night and also much easier to find us as you drive by on busy Washington Blvd.

There is a $5 minimum. Show starts at 8 PM. Reservation number below.

Celebrities. We build them up, we tear them down. Everybody loves a train wreck, everybody loves a comeback. The timeless theme of media and public fascination with celebrity is explored in FLIGHT, Garth Wingfield's play based on the life of Charles Lindbergh will have its west coast premiere in February 2009 at the Attic Theatre in Culver City.

Originally produced Off Broadway by the Melting Pot Theatre Company in 2005 and starred Kerry O'Malley, Gregg Edelman and Brian D'Arcy James, FLIGHT navigates through the life and times of Charles Lindbergh as he became the first person to fly solo nonstop from New York to Paris in 1927 thrusting Lindbergh into the public eye, catapulting him to superstardom, turning him into THE American idol of his time. In 1932, Lindbergh and his wife, Anne, once again became the center of the world's attention when their infant son was kidnapped from their New Jersey home and later found dead. The coverage of the trials and tribulations surrounding the abduction is now regarded as the first media circus, as the public clamored to know every detail. Years later, opinion of Lindbergh soured when he made approving remarks about Adolph Hitler, once again providing fodder for public scrutiny, fueled by media frenzy.

"A well crafted play...a showcase of ideas that should be heard" - The New Yorker

"Fascinating...Covers its subject skillfully and honestly, carefully balancing the pros and cons of this complex figure" - The Village Voice

"Harrowing...A cautionary bio-drama about the perils of fame in America....the best kind of theatre... the kind with a heart" - Variety

FLIGHT, which will have its west coast debut at the Attic Theatre on February 7th, is directed by James Carey and will feature Jeff Blumberg, John Combs, Gerald Downey, Eric Jorgenson, Robin Roy and Kasey Wilson. Sets are by Brian Shnipper, lights by Bosco Flanagan and costumes by Kasey Wilson. Erin Pineda and Marla DuMont will serve as stage managers.

FLIGHT will run February 7 through March 14 with performances Friday and Saturday at 8 PM and Sunday at 2:00 PM. Tickets are $20 and can be purchased by calling 323.525.0600 ext 2# or via online at www.attictheatre.org/tickets. The theatre is equipped with weelchair/handicap access and concessions are available prior to curtain and during intermission.

The Attic Theatre & Film Center (www.attictheatre.org) is located at 5429 W. Washington Boulevard (between Hauser and Fairfax). There is parking on the street in front of the theatre.

ABOUT GARTH WINGFIELD:
Wingfield is the author Dating Games, the collection of one-act comedies that ran at Off-Broadway's Theater Row Studio Theater in June 2003. He also wrote Are We There Yet?, which has been produced in New York and London.

Attic Theatre Ensemble to present
RED SCARE ON SUNSET
by Tony Award Nominated Playwright
Charles Busch

The year is 1951 in Hollywood. America’s sweetheart, Mary Dale, is about to discover that her husband, her best friend, her director and her houseboy are all mixed up in a communist plot to take over Tinseltown. First point of order? Abolishment of the star system – no more top billing!

On September 12, 2008, the Attic Studios and Attic Theatre Ensemble will present Red Scare on Sunset by Tony nominated and Drama Desk Award winning playwright Charles Busch.

Originally produced in 1991 by the WPA Theatre with a subsequent run Off-Broadway at the Lucille Lortel Theatre, Red Scare on Sunset, with its hilarious take on McCarthyism and the surrounding paranoia in Hollywood, is among Busch’s hilarious works that simultaneously spoof and celebrate the classic film genre.

“Mr. Busch is a first-class satirist and farceur and “Red Scare on Sunset” is definitely Busch at his best.” - The New Yorker
“You have to champion the ingenuity of Busch’s writing which twirls twist upon twist and spins into comedy heaven.” - Newsday

In keeping with Busch’s original concept, the Attic Theatre production of Red Scare on Sunset will feature a man – LA favorite Drew Droege – playing the role of heroine Mary Dale. Drew Droege performs at The Groundlings, Upright Citizens Brigade, and Comedy Central Stage, where he produced his solo show, Bad Education. He's been on Comedy Central's Reno 911! and Halfway Home, as well as Oxygen's Campus Ladies. Drew's the voice of Feathers on the online cartoon, Planet Unicorn, which recently won the OMFG Award on Logo's NewNowNext Awards. He's also currently starring in Matt Besser's breakdancing musical, FreakDance: The Forbidden Dirty Boogaloo at Upright Citizens Brigade, and was last seen at the Attic Theatre in Say You Love Satan. He's impersonated Chloe Sevigny at every bar, pool hall, juke joint, and speakeasy in town.

In addition to Droege, Red Scare on Sunset will feature two additional Groundlings alumni, Amy Procacci and Chris Tarantino, all three of whom perform regularly in the Groundlings longform improv show, The Crazy Uncle Joe Show. Also featured in Red Scare on Sunset are Michelle Begley, Eric Jorgensen, Jan Munroe, Sona Tatoyan and Dane Whitlock.

Red Scare on Sunset is directed by Cindy Gendrich and produced by Robin Roy and Christine Stump. Brian Schnipper is the Artistic Director for the Attic Studios and Attic Theatre Ensemble.

Red Scare on Sunset will run September 12 through October 18 with performances Friday and Saturday at 8 PM and Sunday at 2:00 PM.
One Act Marathon Returns To The ATTIC!

On July 25th , the Attic Studios and the Attic Theatre Ensemble will present the 17th annual Denise Ragan Wiesenmeyer One‐Act Marathon at the Attic Theatre in Culver City. Playing for four consecutive weekends, the One‐Act Marathon will continue the Attic Theatre’s 20+ years of continuous award‐winning live theatre. Named for Attic Theatre Ensemble co-founder Denise Ragan Wiesenmeyer, who remained on the board of the Attic Theatre and Film Center until her untimely death in 2007, the One‐Act Marathon’s mission is to nurture relatively unknown playwrights by offering them fully realized productions of their works for the very first time. This playwright competition has produced over 150 plays during its 17 years and in 2008, four new works culled from hundreds of submissions during a national playwriting competition, will be added to this distinguished honor roll.

Black & Blue by Ron Fromstein
Directed by John Szura and featuring Eric Jorgensen.

In this compelling one-man show, Tom considers how his life can go on after he has physically assaulted his wife.

Ex’s Exes by Tom Sime
Directed by Ali Deyer and featuring Luise Heath, Pamela Taylor and Wynee Hu.

The plot concerns Naomi, who bumps into Tracy, the woman that her husband left her for years prior. Now both women have divorced "Ex," and their awkward encounter develops into a friendly one with Tracy going so far as to save Naomi’s struggling theatre company.

Marked for Love by Kasey Wilson
Directed by J. Richey Nash and featuring Billy Briggs, Scott Gerard, Mike Park, Elias McCabe, John Szura, Megan Evanich, Jennifer Erholm and Elizabeth V. Newman.

In this parody of film noir, Private Detective Bolt investigates an art heist that places him in grave danger from corrupt police officers, the city’s most notorious crime lord, and the woman who broke his heart.

 Misconceptions by Donald Steele
Directed by Erika Tasini and featuring Zinah Dietz and Dawn Medina.

After Diana Lazzario talks Gaye Lynn out of having an abortion, Diana’s personal victory turns into a nightmare when the 17‐year‐old girl shows up at her doorstep looking for something more than moral support ‐‐ the pregnant teen needs a roof over her head.

Tickets are priced at $20 each and can be purchased by calling 323.525.0600 ext 2# or online at www.attictheatre.org/tickets.

The theatre is equipped with wheelchair/handicap access for both seating and restroom and has concessions open prior to curtain and during intermission.
The Attic Theatre & Film Center (www.attictheatre.org. ) is located at 5429 W. Washington Boulevard (between Hauser and Fairfax). There is parking on the street in front of the theatre.

The 17th annual Denise Ragan Wiesenmeyer One‐Act Marathon is produced by Attic Theatre Literary Director Jaime Grey and will run July 25th through August 16th, 2008 playing Friday and Saturday evenings at 8:00 PM and Sunday matinees at 2:00 PM.

Originally commissioned by South Coast Repertory with a subsequent limited engagement at the Atlantic Theatre Company in New York City, this latest version from the Attic Theatre will not only mark the west coast premiere of The Hiding Place but also the first time that the play will have a run opened to the public and press alike.

ABOUT THE HIDING PLACE:
Set in the mid-90s New York The Hiding Place concerns Karl – a popular but unsatisfied novelist and Myra, a struggling playwright/waitress new to the city. The two meet and embark upon a letter-writing affair with notes left hidden for each other in a secret spot on a busy street in Manhattan. Eventually letters lead way to a more involved physical affair which, when ended by Karl, is then in turn dramatized by Myra. On a very syncopated opening night, their relationship is made public creating much turmoil for Karl and Myra as well as their circle of friends and fellow artists. Told in a series of flashbacks and fast forwards, The Hiding Place not only satirizes the literary, theatrical and art scene of New York City but also dramatizes the relentless passions and yearnings that lie in the hearts of all artists everywhere.

ABOUT AUTHOR JEFF WHITTY (source: American Theatre Wing)
Jeff Whitty won the 2004 Tony Award for Best Book of a Musical for Avenue Q. Plays include The Further Adventures of Hedda Gabler, The Hiding Place, The Plank Project, Balls, and Suicide Weather. Companies presenting his work include South Coast Repertory, the Atlantic Theater Company, the Vineyard Theatre, The New Group, and New York Stage and Film/Vassar. Screenplays include Zora, a feature for Warner Brothers, and Freedom City an original movie musical for Paramount with music by Andre 3000 of Outkast. As an actor, he's worked Off-Broadway, regionally and in film and television. Whitty is currently working with Jake Shears and John “JJ” Garden of The Scissor Sisters on adapting Armistead Maupin’s Tales of the City into a musical slated to open during the 2009-10 Broadway theatre season.

ABOUT THE HIDING PLACE AT THE ATTIC THEATRE
The Hiding Place will run May 23rd through June 28th with evening performances at 8 PM on Friday and Saturday and matinees on Sunday at 2 PM. Produced by Robin Roy and directed by LA based actor and director Kevin Fabian who recently directed the one-act, List, for the Eclectic Company Theatre in NoHo, The Hiding Place features Jen Kays, Jan Munroe, Brian Shnipper (who currently serves as Artistic Director for the Attic Theatre and Ensemble), Christine Stump, John Szura, Megan Tropea, and Kasey Wilson.

Tickets are priced at $20 each and can be purchased by calling 323.525.0600 ext 2# or online at www.attictheatre.org.

The theatre is equipped with wheelchair/handicap access for both seating and restroom and has concessions open prior to curtain and during intermission.

The Attic Theatre & Film Center is located at 5429 W. Suddenly a vision of male perfection appears before you and asks you out on a date. Wonder of wonders this hunk of hunks wants YOU! Say, then, that you happen to notice a tiny tattoo just where his forehead meets his hairline, a tiny tattoo of the number 666, aka “the number of the beast.” What if this perfect new boyfriend of yours just happened to be the son of Satan? What if, in fact, he was Satan himself, evil incarnate with a six pack!? Would you just dump him and return to your perfect-in-every-way-but-just-too-sweet (sort of) boyfriend? Or would you keep on walking on the wild side, knowing that you might just be heading down a path towards… ETERNAL DAMNATION?

This is the dilemma faced by our hero in Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa’s devilish new comedy, Say You Love Satan, now getting its Los Angeles premiere.

Gay everyman Andrew is spending a boring night at the laundromat when he notices a gorgeous black-haired stranger in the room. The stranger suddenly and without warning rips off his tight t-shirt revealing a body of sculpted perfection and starts to work out, only inches away from Andrew’s face. Not only is this ideal specimen of male beauty the hottest guy Andrew has ever seen, he’s also a fan of Dostoyevsky, Andrew’s all-time favorite novelist, and has read The Brothers Karamazov and even The Possessed ... in the original Russian! “You wanna go dancing,” asks the stranger, whose name is Jack. Is there anyone out there who believes that Andrew will refuse?

Andrew’s best girlfriend Bernadette is not one bit happy about all this. First of all, Andrew has the best (almost) boyfriend a man could wish for? (Jerrod is an MD who, besides devoting his life to research, also saves babies' lives by doing volunteer work holding tots who have been deprived of a parent’s touch.) Secondly, how fair is it that Andrew should meet Mr. Perfect in a laundromat when Bernadette herself has tried just about every dating site/service available, and still come up with zip?

Back to that tiny little 666 on Jack’s forehead. Isn’t it a bit suspicious that his DVD collection is made up entirely of movies like Rosemary’s Baby, The Omen 1, 2, 3, & 4, The Exorcist 1, 2, 3, & 4, and others of a similarly Satanic nature? And what about that limp that Jack develops at sunrise? Does he have some sort of problem being around daylight?

Playwright Aguirre-Sacasa, who also wrote the similarly paranormally themed The Mystery Plays, is adept at combining the humorous and the supernatural. Say You Love Satan is a clever reworking of the Faust legend, though in this case it just might be Andrew’s body the Man In Red is after and not his soul. Aguirre-Sacasa’s script is full of funny lines like: “Are you Russian?” “No, just sullen.” And “There’s a special section of hell reserved for people who write Disney musicals.”

Director Brian Shnipper keeps things rolling swiftly (at a brisk 90 minutes the play could do without the 10-minute intermission) and has assembled a very good cast.

Doug Sutherland is perfect as Andrew, a nice gay guy who could stand to lose a couple pounds and visit the gym more often and is therefore astounded at the attention Jack pays him. Sutherland, who was previously seen in more serious fare (Eurydice and (coincidentally) The Brothers Karamazov) shows real comic flare here.

Elias Gallegos is perfectly gorgeous as Jack, Amber Flamminio is sexy, wry, and funny as Bernadette, and Eric Jorgenson is well cast as Jerrod, handsome to a fault but just too nice for someone whose animal urges make him want to take a walk on the wild side.

Billy Briggs makes a welcome return to the stage following his winning performances in Love! Valour! Compassion! and Judy at the Stonewall. Briggs is all gushing fandom as a club bouncer in awe over meeting Drew Barrymore. Later, he ups the hunk factor in a sexy turn as Raphael, Jack’s divine opposite.

Finally, stealing scenes left and right, is Drew Droege, doing a FABULOUS take on gay flamboyance as Chad, Andrew’s ex. A role which in less skilled hands could be merely stereotypical or even offensive becomes delightful and endearing in Droege’s. Hearing Chad rejoice to Andrew that “I just got cast as Perchik in Fiddler!” and then snap “I can’t help it if you feel threatened by my talent!” (when Chad is just about the last choice that anyone would cast as the student Perchik) is hilarious indeed. Droege also scores briefly as Martin, Bernadette’s Druidic ex-boyfriend, leaves adorning his curly blond locks.

Director Shnipper designed the simple but effective set, which features hundreds of magazine pages of hunky men surrounding a large black and white portrait of Dostoyevsky himself. Brandon Baruch has created a devilish lighting design, and Kimberly Zambrow’s sound design incorporates throbbing club tunes by composer Brian Benison.

Though hardly Shakespeare, Say You Love Satan is nonetheless an entertaining comedy which should please the mostly gay male audience which it is bound to attract. In fact, there are enough laughs to entertain audiences of all persuasions.

ATTIC Theatre & Film Center, 5429 W.
